Wedding Band Weight

Precious metals are measured in troy weight where one troy ounce is just over one standard ounce. Approximately twelve troy ounces constitutes one pound. Gold is measured in troy weight, but when it is an alloy that is used in jewelry, it is measured in carats. A carat is the amount of pure gold that is in jewelry. With 24 carat being pure gold, 18 carat would have more pure gold than 14 carat or 10 carat. Platinum which is generally 95% pure (18 karat is 75% pure) is also measured by troy weight and is 35 times more rare than gold.

Light Weight

Many people desire a ring that is light weight and easier to wear. A light weight ring is basically created with less gold; therefore it is lighter and usually less expensive.

Medium Weight

Most rings are created with the average person in mind, therefore with a medium weight. The amount of gold in a ring is what determines the weight, so if a ring is medium weight it is probably 14 carat gold although this can fluctuate.

Heavy Weight

Of the three most popular metals, platinum, silver and gold; platinum is the heaviest in weight and the most durable. Usually platinum rings are 905 pure platinum and 10% another alloy. If jewelry is more than 95% platinum then it is marked PT950.
