Synthetic Diamonds
The General Electric Company produced the first synthetic diamonds in 1954. A synthetic diamond is basically a rock that has the refractive index, durability and roughness of a natural diamond but is man-made. A synthetic diamond is different from stimulant diamonds, such as cubic zirconium, glass or moissanite.
No synthetic diamonds were introduced in the market until the 1990s, although the technology for synthetic diamonds was introduced in 1954. This was owing to the fact that it took several years for General Electric to create a synthetic diamond that could be similar to that of a natural diamond. Also, the process of producing such a diamond was much more costly than the process to make and cut natural diamonds.
Finally, Gemesis Corporation found a way to make synthetic diamonds which were of the same quality as natural diamonds, but were priced cheaply. Today, Gemesis produces colored as well as synthetic white diamonds. These diamonds are rare and at a shortage. They also sell for about 1/3 of the cost of a natural diamond. In many cases, the fact is that synthetic diamonds are rarer than natural diamonds!
