Diamond Scams

You must avoid the scams when it comes to diamond purchases, which are innumerable. Though a majority of these scams are minor, there are many other major ones that occur occasionally pertaining to the purchase and sale of diamonds. Scams can be seen mainly because people who purchase diamonds do not take care to learn the facts about diamonds. Hence they can be easily fooled.

The Total Carat Weight scam is one of the most common among today’s jewelry stores.

Only the total carat weight of all diamonds in the jewelry piece is mentioned on the tag attached to the piece of jewelry, as opposed to listing the separate total weight of each diamond. This makes clients think that the main diamond in the piece jewelry is larger than it is. You can ask about the total carat weight of the center stone. You must be careful about fractions, though. Jewelry stores can also round off the weights of diamonds. This implies that if the jeweler informs you that it is a ¾ carat diamond, it possibly ranges ½ and ¾ carat – but is closer to ¾.

Fluorescence scams are run by jewelry stores in varying degrees. If the store refers to the diamond as a blue-white diamond it is a scam. Though a blue-white diamond sounds special and unique, this diamond can be inferior – even though the jeweler will impose the view that it is special and original. Also jewelry stores may exhibit their diamonds in bright lights because diamonds can shine in bright lights. You can view the diamond in a darker and different type of lighting as well.

Those clients who want appraisals on diamonds received as gifts are targeted by some unscrupulous jewelers. By underestimating the value of the diamond and calling it worthless, they will offer to take it and trade it for a superior diamond, making you pay the difference in price. This is referred to as low balling. Before making such a decision you must get at least 3-4 opinions.

The diamond which you have chosen and paid for can also be replaced with another inferior diamond when you leave it to be set in a piece of jewelry or leave a diamond ring to be sized. You can avoid this dirty trick by doing business with a reliable jeweler. You must avoid new or unknown jewelers.

Consumers can also fall a prey to a host of other scams. By using your best judgment, you can buy diamonds with greatest care and consideration.
